Examples of Teen Films!
For this post I decided to showcase a few examples of films within the "teen film" genre,or more specifically,"coming-of-age" films. For those of you who don't know the exact definition of coming-of-age films, they are films in which the main character or group of character develops themselves throughout their childhood into either a more mature person or adulthood in extreme cases.A few great examples of this type of film genre are:The Goonies (1985),Stand By Me (1986),Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986), The Sandlot (1993), Boyhood (2014),It (both 1990 and 2017) and Submarine (2010).In case anyone hasn't or would like to know the plots to these films,I'll list them below as an example of the types of stories these movies tend to tell.
The Goonies: In order to save their home from forclosure, brothers Mikey and Brand (along with a group of their friends) set out to find a lost pirate treasure based on a map they found inside their own attic.
Stand By Me: After finding out that a kid was killed by an oncoming train, four Oregon boys set out to find his body in turn to get their pictures in the paper, but the journey becomes much more than a quest for fame.
Ferris Bueller: Ferris Bueller,a high school student who has a knack for skipping classes, tries his efforts to make one last ditch before graduation, dragging along his girlfriend and his best friend along for the journey.
The Sandlot: Scottie Smalls,a new kid to the neighborhood, finds a group of kids who play baseball at the sandlot and manages to befriend them, making the most out of their summer together.
Boyhood: This film follows Mason through 12 years of his life, from childhood until he enters college, showing the ups and downs of his family's divorce, school life, etc.
It: The town of Derry,Maine is being terrorized by an unworldly shape-shifting being,it taking children from the town every 27 years.Seven young outcasts band together to stop this threat. (I know the plot seems more fantastical than nonfiction but I'll allude more to this in a later post.
Submarine: Since the plot of this is fairly rated R and I'm not sure about the restrictions for these posts,I'll sum it up quick.A Welsh teen,Oliver, sets out to right wrongs in his life, such as get with the love of his life and hold his family together.
All of these plots (except for one) all have their story embedded in realistic, yet fictional, scenarios.By this I mean that the majority of these plots could very well happen in our reality. These believable plots ground the film in reality, making the audience forget even more so that they're watching a film, which makes it more enjoyable to view."It" is the only exception to this list and I have a reason for this,in which I will explain in detail in a later post.
I think this thread is really interesting! I was wondering how you found these? & for creative criticism, use spaces. Please.
ReplyDeleteHi! First I would like to say that your research is good and I love the different examples that you've given. I think a small improvement would be if you included some visuals in your posts (for example, you could add some of the movie covers in this post).
